Treatment:

Undipped - This means your high quality Russian Pine boxes are assembled with stainless screws but is in its natural state and will need some kind of protection from the weather.

Dipped - The box has been assembled with 20 stainless steel screws then dipped in hot Microcrystalline for 9 to 10 minutes to preserve the timber for a long life outside. Microcrystalline is similar to Paraffin Wax but is a higher quality and has a melting point of 80 degrees. Paraffin Wax has been commonly used for beehive boxes but it will melt at 60 degrees and can leach out of the timber boxes on a hot summer day. This will leave them susceptible to rotting! 

Storeys:

1 Box High - This means your package will include one 3/4 depth assembled russian pine super. The super will contain 10 x 3/4d 33mm Frames assembled and fitted with Medium Brood 157 foundation.

2 Boxes High - This means your package will include two 3/4 depth assembled russian pine supers. The supers will contain 20 x 3/4d 33mm Frames assembled and fitted with Medium Brood 157 foundation.

3 Boxes High - This means your package will include three 3/4 depth assembled russian pine supers. The supers will contain 30 x 3/4d 33mm Frames assembled and fitted with Medium Brood 157 foundation. Also included, is a Plastic queen excluder with top entry, to go between the 2nd and 3rd box.

Roof:

Technoset Roof with Top Feeder - This means your package will include a Technoset Insulated and Vented roof with a 7 Litre feeder. The features a drown design with safe bee drink areas. The feeder fits neatly inside the Technoset roof and takes no extra space. It doubles up as a hive mat and can be left on the beehive all year round. the vents allows damp air to exit up through the feeder vents and out the roof vents.

Galvanized Roof with Hive mat - With this option your package will include a Standard Galvanised roof with sprung ends and a thickness of 0.55mm. A hive mat is also included. The hive mat rim is made from russian pine timber, treated in micro-crystalline wax to make it last. The hardboard is also oil tempered both sides to make it last.

Yellow-legged Hornet (Vespa Velutina) Selective Trap

The yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) is a serious biosecurity threat to honeybees and other pollinators. Biosecurity New Zealand is currently responding to detections on Auckland’s North Shore, and is urging the public to stay vigilant and report sightings.

Why this matters for NZ beekeepers

• Hornets prey on bees at hive entrance causing the bees to stay in the hive.
• The ongoing stress of this "hawking" can cause colony collapse

How it works

1) Attract

Biosecurity NZ uses a mix of carbohydrate and protein trapping approaches in their response work. We recommend mixing Grape Juice and Brown Sugar 50/50 for Bait. This has been very successful in Georgia, USA.

Tip. When hornets die, they put out a pheromone that attracts more hornets. If you are in a hornet area, leave 2 or 3 dead hornets in the trap at all times, where possible. 

2) Capture

• Hornets tend to move toward light—this design encourages top-section movement
• A flexible one-way cone helps reduce escapes once inside

This “anti-return cone” concept and the broader attract–capture–select approach are well established in European hornet-trapping products and use

3) Select (in/out control)

• Entry sizing helps limit access by larger non-target insects. (Not important in NZ)
• Escape points help smaller insects get out
• Separated bait reduces drowning risk

Internal hive dimensions must be the Langstroth standard to ensure the cage fits properly and there are no gaps for the queen to escape.

Many beekeepers ensure their queens are marked so they are easy to find for caging when required.

As we see more and more varroa resistance to the synthetic miticide strips, beekeepers are turning to organic acids for successful varroa control. There is no evidence worldwide of the mites getting resistant to them. The stainless steel cages are very resilient in an acid environment and will not oxidise and deteriorate like galvanised steel products.

As you will be aware some equipment is provided in the course but not all of the essentials. We have made it easy for you and setup these special packages to provide you with the rest of the essential equipment you will need. The items included are based on feedback from Tutors and what we see best for you.

This package is for people running 3/4 Depth hives and includes a Suit and Gloves

Included in the package:

Assembled 3/4 Depth Box
These are extra supers for your hive. The frames below will go in these and they will need to go on the hive as it grows. They are untreated and will need painting like the box in your course.

8 x Wooden frames with Medium Brood Wax Fitted
These are for the first wooden box above - they are for the second brood nest. You will build the first brood box in your course. We have done wood and wax as this is the most natural and best for the brood nest. There is only 8 as we are allowing for a frame feeder mentioned below

1 x 3/4 Frame Feeder
This is an essential part of a hive as in winter the hive can use up all its stores and need to be fed Sugar Syrup to stay alive. As mentioned above, we have only done 8 frames for the second brood box so you can fit this in. It may need to be put in your first brood box if your hive is only 1 story high.

1 x SS Queen excluder with wooden rim
When your hive is ready to produce honey you will need to put on the honey super mentioned above. This excluder will go between the brood boxes and the hive to stop the queen going into the honey and laying eggs. you only want honey bees in there!

1 x Emlock Strapper
Keep this around your hive at all times when you are not going through it. it will keep everything secure and tidy.

1 x Pack of 4 Apivar Strips
this is a varroa treatment for your bees. It is normal that within the first 6 months of having your bees, you will need to treat them for varroa. these strips will treat both brood boxes.

The Vaporizer bowl temperature is very important to maximize the output of the Oxalic Acid without degrading it. Extensive lab testing shows that keeping the bowl temperature between 230 and 260 degrees Celsius is best:

Applications & suggested dose rates.

1. For beehives with solid bases, apply 2g of OA vapour at the bottom entry. Block the entry with a wet towel for 5–7 minutes.

2. For vented bases, use a vent blocker sheet, then follow the same process.

3. For hives with difficult-to-seal vented bases, apply 3g from the top via hive mat notch or excluder door/notch. See our stainless steel excluders with entry.

4. If the hive has a top feeder with a wooden rim, many beekeepers are applying the vapour through the rim directly below the feeder tray and into the bee space. Drill a 6.5mm hole in the rim on a slight downward angle to direct the vapour below the feeder tray. Plug with a golf tee or similar between treatments.

5. Through-the-wall dosing: drill a 6.5mm hole in the brood box and insert the brass nozzle. Plug with a golf tee or similar between treatments. It is best to locate the hole as high as possible at the side of the front plate so the vapour is directed alongside the outer frame. This method is the least most desirable of the 5 options.

NB. There should be 80mm to 100mm of free air space in front of the nozzle during discharge. Otherwise, 10% - 20% of the oxalic acid will solidify on a surface that is right in front and too close.

Russian Pine Jumbo size Box with assembled Wooden Frames:

This listing is for:-

• 1 x Russian Pine Jumbo size Box. Standard grade.
• 10 x Jumbo size Russian Pine Frames with 33mm end bars and grooved bottom bars.
• 10 x sheets of Heavy Brood 266 Beeswax Foundation, fitted to the frames.

The box is screwed together with 28 stainless steel screws and will require painting or some form of weather protection. Russian Pine is very slow growing so the growth rings are close together to make a denser and more stable material for beehives.These boxes are excellent quality and have rounded outer edges on the front and back plates. This makes it easier to paint and it sheds the rain better.

Timber thickness of the box is 20mm.

Sealed and durable with handles, this is the perfect size to soak 100 of the Swedish Cloth strips. It is not recommended to use soak bins any larger because it is very hard to get a consistent weight per strip.

Stack bins of freshly soaked batches together to conserve heat and facilitate a better soaking process. If possible, leave the bins in a warm room at around 30°C (86°F) for first 2 hours after soaking, or leave a fan heater blowing warm air on them for a few hours.
