This bee harvester kit makes it super easy to add more bees to the SpyHive™ if required.
Simply shake some bees into a larger general bucket then tip them into the mesh harvester basket. Clip the funnel on and secure with the lock mechanism. Ensure that the black plug is fitted. Spray the bees with vanilla essence (through the mesh) to calm them and mask the pheromones. Transport them to the SpyHive™ and spray them again with vanilla essence before releasing into the SpyHive™ through the hole in top cover over the pollen pattie compartment.
NB. Vanilla essence diluted 1:3 with water can be used to shield the scent of the bees to stop fighting when introduced to another colony.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Why do I need to treat my bees for mites?
We already know that bees play a vital role in both the eco system and economy. This is why looking after them and ensuring their health as a species is crucial.
Mites like the Varroa mite feed off bees in their larva stage. This introduces a number of harmful bacteria and diseases to bees in your hive. This weakens your entire colony putting them at risk and perpetuating the spread of mites into other colonies.
What affect do the mites have on bees?
Larva that has been attacked by Varroa mites can suffer from:
Shorter life spans
Deformed wings
Poor immune systems
Feeding issues
Mating complications
Lower pesticide resistance
All of the above make it significantly harder for bees to perform their duty in a hive and thus make it harder for the hive to survive.
What are Varroa mites?
Varroa mites are parasites that externally attack the Honeybee. Through exportation over decades these mites have come in contact with colonies of both Asian and European Honeybee’s.
The mites cause disease in hives known as Varroatosis and are understood to be a leading cause of colony collapse disorder.
How do I know if I need to treat my hive?
As these mites are incredibly small they are often hard to detect. If your colony is heavily infested they will show obvious symptoms however, if infestation levels are low or just starting out the symptoms can be much harder to spot.
It is advised to routinely check your hives around the change in seasons ( once in spring and once in autumn per year).
How Do I Check forMites?
You can check for Varroa mites in a number of ways including:
Mite catchment strips
Sugar dusting
Alcohol wash
Uncapping
Make sure you do your research and find out which method of testing will work best for your hive.
How Do I Treat My Hive WithApivar Strips?
Apivar strips are one of the most easy and effective forms of treatment against varroa mites.
How to use Apivar strips:
Simply remove the strips from their packaging and separate them. Each strip has hanging hooks cut into them. Hang each strip between comb frames in the bee cluster. It is best to allow a minimum of two frames between each strip.
Leave strips to hang for at least 8 weeks and up to 10 weeks. Make sure to dispose of after use. While your strips are in, be sure to keep an eye on the brood nest cluster. if the cluster moves, reposition the strips accordingly for best results.

Beekeepers have been using Oxalic Acid mixed with Glycerine all over the world for many years. They have found it extremely beneficial to the health of the colony. It can be used at any time of the year and the secret to its effectiveness is to maintain regular treatments.
Beequip run their own beehives for research and development and all the staff at Beequip have beekeeping experience. Oxalic acid solutions have been extensively researched and tested to maximise the results. The current economic challenges require most beekeepers to look at reducing costs wherever possible. The cardboard strips are extremely environmentally friendly when it comes time for disposal, as compared to the millions of plastic strips that are used in the industry, and end up in land fill.

BQ Swedish Cloth

Swedish Cloth is used extensively by beekeepers in the USA to keep their beehives healthy.
It is an excellent matrix for absorbing Oxalic Acid / Glycerine solution.
The Beequip Swedish Cloth is a high-quality product made in Germany, consisting of 70% cellulose, 30% cotton, and is 100% biodegradable.
Now available in two options:Standard & Certified Organic.
Important: Research from clients in the USA states that four strips are more effective than using a single pad with the same surface area. Having 260% more edge line significantly improves efficacy.
Packed 4000 per carton, 80,000 per pallet.
Directions:
Prepare a solution comprising 50% Oxalic Acid Dihydrate and 50% food-grade glycerine by weight. See detailed instructions and videos in the mixing guide. Beequip Cardboard strips are soaked in a solution of 40% Oxalic Acid, whereas Swedish Cloth strips use a 50% solution. Note that a 50% OA/Glycerine solution takes slightly longer to dissolve and mix properly.
While the solution is around 54–58°C, soak each strip with approximately 25 grams of solution. Place the strips on their edges in a flat-bottomed soak bin, ideally in a warm place (20–30°C). Strips absorb the solution fully within 60 minutes. Allow the bin to stay in a warm place for 24 hours to equalise the solution distribution. When cooled to room temperature, the solution will solidify within each strip.
The strips can then be used immediately or packed into airtight ziplock bags for long-term storage.
A typical strong colony with two brood boxes should have four strips placed horizontally between the brood boxes, leaving spaces between the strips.
Scrape off burr comb first.
The four strips work more effectively than using a single larger pad.
Reports from the USA indicate that this system is extremely effective when placed horizontally between the brood boxes in double brood box hives. However, it is less successful over single brood box colonies.
Randy Oliver (scientificbeekeeping.com) agrees with this observation, advising that OAE strips be fitted vertically over the frames when used in single brood box colonies, similar to our cardboard strips. See Beequip Cardboard Strips for reference.
Fun fact: Bees maintain an environment in the brood nest that is ideal for the cloth’s effectiveness, maintaining a temperature near 34°C and humidity between 58%–70%. This controlled environment is absent above a single brood box colony.
Strip Life: The lifespan of strips depends on bee activity such as propolis coating and chewing. Replace strips every 8–12 weeks, or every 10 weeks in cases of significant mite re-invasion, particularly during Autumn.
Offset Model Can brand the centre of frame top bars while in a box.
Adjustable height to 310mm or 520mm
